Welcome back!

With seven weeks to go till the first time trial of the year, a random sinus infection is slowing me down. Nevertheless, training continues. The time trial is a 20k distance which is what you would find in a regulation sprint triathlon. It will be a very quick race with the winners clocking in the 26-27min range. Ill begin preparing the bike and test riding the course soon.

Considering how early this race is in the year I won’t be tapering too much because I don’t want to lose any training momentum that I’ve gained thus far. With the race being hardly 30 minutes there really isn’t a reason to slow down anyways. Well, besides that I just need to get a new pair of running shoes. My Brooks with probably 500+ miles are dead.

Snow is everywhere outside but I’m still getting to the gym.

It snowed quite a lot here for the last few days. Enough that I have been stuck bumming rides to the gym from people with appropriately prepared cars.  I have been averaging around 40 miles of running a week since my last post. I haven’t spent much time in the pool but I have been using the rowing machine to keep that aspect of my training alive. I am starting to look at the calender for next year. I will post a list of my possible appearances soon. I am certain though that I will be beginning the season with the Jack Frost Time Trial on February 22nd. Its a 20k bike so it should be a decent performance test. I am hoping for a time in the 27 minute range but the course can get very windy.

Well I was offered a discount sponsorship by Fluid Recovery Nutrition. So now I have a hook-up for my recovery drink needs. Training is going well. A couple days ago I was able to get 9 miles in an hour flat. Not too shabby. I have also been putting in a decent amount of time in on the bike. My ribs are recovering decently. I don’t expect to be out of the pool much longer. Work on the gift guide is almost complete so keep your eyes open! As usual let me know if you have any requests for explanations, reviews, or write ups! I love new material!

Well after a 45 mile ride yesterday I thought I might give everybody some insight in to how I keep track of all my running and cycling workouts. The ride was great. I planned to only do a 20k at a 90% effort level but I caught up with a mass of riders from the Vancouver Bicycle Club. I rode with them for about 10 miles but on one of the large climbs I attacked and completely dusted them ;) Because of that, I didn’t know where the route went after and I lost the group. I continued on my ride and caught up with another group from my old cycling team North River Racing. It was good to catch up with some of the guys and the pace was much better than the VBC group. I’m looking forward to training with them more.

After the bike ride and a little nap I hit the gym for a 40 minute 10k which equates to roughly a 80-90% effort? Well anyways it felt very good considering I had biked 45 miles earlier that day. Well off for another day of training. I love this.

Testing the Time Trial bike on city streets. 12 days to go!

After testing I have decided to stick with this bike. The bike is a Cannondale Six13 Ironman. The biggest difference between this bike and a standard road racing bike is the lower bottom bracket position. I just have to be mindful of where in a pedal stroke when I’m going through a corner. Otherwise the dura-ace brakes work wonderfully. All that is left to be done with the bike is tweak my body positioning some and install the S-bend aero bars in place of the current ones. And yes…It is a Lance Armstrong jersey…I feel like poser when I wear it :)

So today started as a normal day but quickly became an intense one. I began the day recording the video you will see soon discussing my data collection during run and bike workouts. After that I hit the road for what was going to be a nice 10k. It turned into an all-out run. After coming home and recovering, I went to the gym for “just a swim”. Well some fool in the pool thought it would be fun to race me. I had to crush those dreams. Because of that I ended up with about 1500 yards at near race pace. Being all fired up I decided to hit the stationary bikes. 30 minutes later I decided “lets do a brick” so I went and did a 19min 5k immediately after the bike workout. Needless to say Im tired but as determined and fired up as ever!

Wow, that was a tiring day. 18 days to go.

So I started the day with a cycling/running brick that was sprint race distances. The bike felt decent but the run was really good. After that I went to the gym for another run and then did a little over a 1000 yards in the pool. I’m going to start recording some videos about training tips and my training so watch out for those. Im looking forward to the Treasure Island Tri more than ever. If I were to podium at the event I think my dedication to becoming a pro will be even more steadfast and validate my efforts. I will be throwing down absolutely everything I have on the course we’ll see if anyone can keep up :)

Transition photo from the Late Summer Madness Tri

Transition photo from the Late Summer Madness Tri

My workout today was almost entirely in the gym. I started the day with a light run/walk with a friend at Tyron park in Lake Oswego which barely got my heart rate up. After that I pretty much ate then went straight to the gym. At the gym I did 40 minutes on the treadmill which gave me a total of about 5.6 miles. Used a packet of GU 15 minutes in which definitely gave me a little extra kick towards the end. After the run workout I hit the pool for a decent workout. I’m a little sore from the last few days so the workout was fairly erratic. I would venture a guess of around 2000 yards today. Because I seem to enjoy an extra large dose of lactic acid I hit the stationary bike for 30 minutes after. Overall it was a pretty tiring day. Tomorrows post will have a little more bike tech stuff as I’m starting to get the bike ready for the race.
